Charlotte Douglas International Airport was established in 1935, then Charlotte Municipal Airport, and is now the 6th busiest airport in the United States. Charlotte Douglas International Airport provides passage for millions of flyers every year. CLT Airport’s busiest international route is to Cancun, Mexico, serving over 350,000 passengers in 2014. Their busiest domestic route is to Atlanta, Georgia, with over 900,000 passengers flying last year. CLT Airport sees almost 45 million passengers every year! The airport also facilitates military flights.In 2010, CLT Airport received the "Best Airport," Eagle Award from the International Air Transport Association (IATA)!
CLT Airport Management & Sustainability
Charlotte Douglas International Airport management are working on incorporating more sustainability initiatives into the airport design and operations. They’ve taken a specific focus on water efficiency and energy efficiency, ensuring all appliances on the compound using water are high efficiency, and installing electric vehicle charging stations. CLT Airport is divided into five different concourses: A, B, C, D, and E. Plans for a new, additional Concourse were proposed in 2015, to be built in the area formerly used for car rentals. CLT Airport Information & Gate Designation
- Concourse A includes Gates A1-A12. The following Airlines operate through Concourse A: Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and Via Airlines.
- Concourse B includes Gates B1-B16. American Airlines operates through Concourse B.
- Concourse C includes Gates C2-C19. American Airlines operates through Concourse C.
- Concourse D includes Gates D1-D13. American Airlines and Lufthansa airlines operate through Concourse D.
- Concourse E includes Gates E1-E34 and E35A&B, E36, and E38A&B. American Airlines operates through Concourse E.
The restaurants, shops, and services are all on the same level as the departures. There are no fewer than seven separate Starbucks Coffee shops in the airport, one at almost all the concourses, and a couple within the center atrium. Ticketing is also in the atrium. There are several parking lots to the North of the airport, and an interactive parking map is available on the CLT Airport website. These lots fill up very quickly and are very costly.
