Overview | Des Moines International Airport
Just three miles southwest of Des Moines, DSM is used for civic as well as military flights. With an area of 2,625 acres, it's one of the best mid-size airports in the state of Iowa. On average, the airport has 83,744 aircraft operations, or about 229 per day. Currently, the airport has one terminal with two concourses - each with gates that correspond to specific few domestic airline carriers. Concourse A and B have a combined total of 12 gates spread across carriers such as Allegiant Air, Southwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines. Where you go in terms of gates will depend on what carrier you're booked with as well as the destination you're headed to.
The airport is, as many are, split into two levels with different things on each. On the first floor as you enter from the Cowles St. entrance you can find the ticketing counter, baggage claim, the gift shop and more including accessible restrooms and counters for various car rental companies. This way, getting your transportation out of the airport is easier than ever. On the airport grounds, there's tons of DSM parking as well as shuttle bus services, so choose your transport situation wisely. If you decide not to take public transit, that's also accessible from the airport, you'll need to take advantage of the Des Moines Airport Parking.
DSM is home to all kinds of retail and food locations to help travellers make any last minute purchases. Whether it's ordering a full meal from Pizza Hut's express menu, getting a pick me up from Freidrich's Coffee to shopping at any number of gift shops or even branded shops like Liz Clairborne, there are tons of buying opportunities at DSM.
